The Air between Two Women is a conversation between Anawana Haloba and Francesca Grilli about the word ‘residue’ as it relates to human experience.
“I believe all human beings have an invisible bag of air surrounding them, a congested and loud bag that carries many kinds of residue in a mental, memory and physical state. This could be expressed through words, images or objects. We have picked ‘mental residue’ as our point of departure. This phrase should not be taken in its literal meaning, nor should it be mistaken for the idea of memory, since memory produces its own residue.
In today’s globalized world, cultures are continually evolving, reforming and being re-emphasized. We find ourselves going back to the past to find fragments of memory to ground our being, thus creating a fantasized reality of the past. It is possible that this mentally charged residue, carried in a bag of air around us, could actually be positive. But perhaps it is a source of pain, loss, or a reminder of love.” Anawana Haloba
