Shadowing Manifesta 7, 2008 postcards

TRENTO

Attila Bruni is a researcher at the Faculty of Sociology of the University of Trento and member of the Research Unit on Communication, Organizational Learning and Aesthetics. His research concentrates on the relational and symbolic aspects of work and organizing and often implies “shadowing,” a research technique based on following a person step by step over the course of her/his everyday work. Attention is directed at taken-for-granted activities, the processes of attribution and sustenance of mundane meanings, the means by which some of them prevail while others disappear. Shadowing aims at a contextual understanding of actions and symbols, showing their mutual relationships and construction. Bruni and his team (Daniele De Pretto, Veronica Taschetti, Jota Videira) spent time shadowing Manifesta 7’s curatorial teams at Bolzano/Bozen, Rovereto, and Trento. Their observations are presented in form of postcards, short fragments of the invisible and performative work that lies in the backstage of Manifesta 7; a reconstruction of the links among collective work, artistic production and symbolic imaginary.
