Drawing on a voluminous knowledge of both mainstream and obscure currents in art history, Christoph Ruckhäberle has forged a sensibility all his own. Any attempt to dissect his images based on references is met with resistance, a quality in his work he describes as “a construction of reality, not a representation or impression.” Often returning to a characteristic vocabulary of partially undressed figures, social arrangements drawn from memory and historical nostalgia, his work has also evolved toward a subtle preoccupation with pattern and decoration. The ornamentation steps in to complicate the figure-ground relationship.
