The photographs, films, videos and performances of Althea Thauberger often involve long or short-term collaborations within actual or make-believe sociopolitical structures. At Manifesta 7 Thauberger is presenting new works based on texts by three Ladin writers from the Fassa Valley.
The approximately 30,000 Ladins of the Dolomites are an ethnic and linguistic minority. Ladin is an ancient Rhaeto-Romance language still spoken in these valleys—which until the development of transportation corridors around the First World War, were largely isolated and had developed distinct, complex micro-cultures and social rituals. The valleys have seen massive transformations in the 20th Century. After thousands of years of subsistence agriculture, and periods of oppression, the region emerged from the traumas of the wars and fascist period with a booming tourist economy. The Fassa Valley is the only Ladin-speaking area in the province of Trentino. The 7,000 Ladini in the Valley speak a dialect that is distinct from—and sometimes not understandable to—Ladin speakers from the other Valleys. Amongst these 7,000, three idioms are spoken in the Fassa Valley. Beginning with the language itself, Thauberger’s work considers their complex recent history.
In collaboration with Claus Soraperra, Vigilio Iori, Stefano dell’Antonio and the Istituto Culturale Ladino della Val di Fassa.
