Margrét H. Blöndal’s sculptures and installations are spatial poems, woven using diverse fabrics and materials found in everyday life. Her work is emotive, sensual, and generous. It is a delicate balance between control and tension, between lightness and weight, with contrasting colors to punctuate and delineate the space. Textured fabrics, fragmented surfaces, pieces of cloth, cables and string are rolled, squeezed and stretched, as if wounded or mutilated, as part of the artist’s obsessive labor to generate a new spatial configuration, where the domestic and the original space contribute to the newly conceived volume. Blöndal’s fragile, sculptural arrangements bear the quality of nomadic objects, always on the move, seeking their proper place and identity in a crowd of noise and randomness. Teeming , conceived for the Manifattura Tabacchi, is the artist’s response to the spatial aesthetics suggested by the halls of industrial architecture. Here, the intimacy of a subtle sculptural gesture is a challenge to the uniformity of the interior, lending the work lure of decadence and melancholy. In her new series of drawings and watercolors, like pages from an artist’s diary, Blöndal freezes the emotional states of a perplexed subject.
