Roaming through urban and topographic environments, the artist-duo BURGHARD searches for places that defy regular social standardization and vacant sites that evade descriptiveness. The artists confront the linear processes of reasoning according to Western rationality with less logical spatial categories. BURGHARD’s current work deals with pictorial and textual processing, and the adaptation of these experiences. On blackboards, they record their analytical approach and poetic reflections in a continuous surface of script and sketches. Images and words are erased and then redrawn, combined in order to create a sense of the before and after. Words and phrases are disengaged from their usual linear placement, allowing new potential spaces to open up. BURGHARD’s texts are part of a collage of sequences assembled from various extracts, including images of ideal spaces and typographic structures. These collages react to the information on the blackboards, conveying it to the spectator while simultaneously creating a more immediate spatial experience. Whereas the focus of BURGHARD’s earlier work was about the control and/or denial of information, the blackboards search for the indescribable. Due to their trial character, the blackboards function both as independent objects as well as “storyboards” for future sculptural, filmic or architectural pieces. The new installation, Plot developed for Manifesta 7, continues BURGHARD’s research into specific cartographies of the mind. Here too, media and everyday culture provide a vocabulary for the analytical and poetic re-evaluation of information.
