FORTEZZA/FRANZENSFESTE

Italy’s most renowned feminist philosopher, Adriana Cavarero, is currently professor of political philosophy at the University of Verona. As a member of the Expert Group on the Humanities at the European Commission in Brussels, among many other advisory positions, Cavarero engages in the up-to-the-minute discussions on research policies and their commitment to social issues. In recent publications such as Relating Narratives : Storytelling and Selfhood (2000) and For More than One Voice. Toward a Philosophy of Vocal Expression (2005) she tackles the subject of the human voice and its impact on the identity-shaping process of the speaker. Merging linguistics, musicology, political theory and oral studies, she grasps the “devocalization of the Logos” as the privileging of the embodied voice over the immaterial semantic; mind over body. Her ‘scenario’ for Fortezza / Franzensfeste consists of a dialogue between Plato’s Cave Analogy and herself: by inserting the metaphor and mythological female figure of Echo, she updates the classical text with the “audio architecture” of the fortress, its “audible imagination” and the reciprocal resonance of the maternal nature of an edifice that is not only fortifying, but also sheltering.
