Traveling a fine line between the hilarious and the traumatic, the video- and performance-based work of Tamy Ben-Tor makes unapologetic excursions into both. A gut-wrenching effect is produced by extracting the most abject, florid, unrecognizable behavior from an archive of psychotic impressions and exhibiting them to the point of exhaustion, a gesture she describes as wanting “to tear characters out of their natural habitat and place them in a domain of idiocy.” At Manifesta 7 she is showing Gewald, a video in which, she says, “a healthy Swedish man who becomes sick, an American Hassidic woman, a Ukranian folk dancer singing in Romanian, and Adolf Eichmann learning Yiddish create a seemingly impossible combination that in the end does in fact come together in a dream-like state.”
