The carefully measured, conceptual scenarios devised by Daniel Knorr result from in-depth observations of a contemporary society imprisoned in the tight costumes of political apparatus, outmoded social structure and national identity. Knorr’s critical intrusions into the public sphere combine the Situationists’ strategies of confronting urban contexts, the discourse of an institution constructing a functional site and various conceptual practices. His anti-works use the void and absence as operating tools; they concentrate on the marginal as the true habitat of an identity with principles. He applies subversion as a working method when questioning dominant systems of power and authority. Ex-Privato loosely refers to the artist’s project for the Romanian Pavilion at the 51st Venice Biennale. Called European Influenza , the political message was articulated by the radical act of leaving the interior empty and materializing the artwork only in people’s minds through interaction and in the media. In Ex-Privato the artist´s intervention consists of changing the status of one of the Manifesta 7 venues, ex-Peterlini. For the duration of the exhibition, it is declared a public space by the artist’s decision to remove the doors and leave the space open 24 hours a day. Knorr perceives the action and reaction of the curator, the artists, and the public as the “materialization” of the work. The project tests the limits of a democratic space in a post-political landscape. A publication will be produced after the exhibition, portraying the different processes of the project.
